Jefferson Pérez elected president of Ecuador's Olympic Committee
Jefferson Pérez, the 1996 Olympic gold‑medal race‑walker, assumed the presidency of the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) on 31 July 2026 after the resignation of Jorge Delgado Panchana. The new board, announced by the COE, lists Lorena Arroyo as first vice‑president, Francisco Carvallo as second vice‑president, Carlos Manzur as secretary general, Fernando Ibáñez as treasurer and includes several other members.
The Ecuadorian government had placed the COE under temporary intervention on 15 June 2026, citing legal issues with Delgado’s re‑election. The Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture said it would begin procedures to lift that intervention, but the COE issued a letter denying any agreement with the government to do so. The dispute continues as the new leadership prepares athletes for the 2026 South American Games in Argentina and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
