Ecuador prepares emergency response for El Niño phenomenon

Ecuador is intensifying its emergency preparations as the El Niño phenomenon approaches. The National Risk Management Secretariat (SNGR) has activated a red alert and evaluated over 2,800 spaces to serve as temporary shelters. This network has the capacity to accommodate more than 140,000 families, totaling approximately 567,000 people. The strategy includes a “Single-Family Temporary Housing” model, providing 22-square-meter modules for those whose homes are severely damaged.

Regional authorities are also taking action. In Imbabura, the Prefecture has deployed machinery and invested approximately USD 2.4 million to strengthen response capabilities and maintain road connectivity. Meanwhile, the government is addressing potential energy shortages caused by low water levels in hydroelectric reservoirs. Officials have suggested that households reduce electricity consumption by 10% and have implemented scheduled disconnections for high-voltage companies to manage the impact of the dry season and anticipated weather changes.

Public perception reflects high concern, with a recent survey indicating that 55% of Ecuadorians believe El Niño will directly affect their homes, primarily through flooding and landslides. Current weather patterns show intensifying warm conditions in the equatorial Pacific, prompting continuous monitoring by meteorological agencies.
