Ecuador prepares for 2027-2031 local elections amid concerns over rental candidates

Ecuador will hold its next sectional elections on 29 November 2024 to choose prefects, mayors, councilors, parish board members and counselors for the CPCCS for the 2027‑2031 term. More than 61,800 candidates have been registered.

Observers warn that many of those candidates are "rental" or borrowed figures lacking party roots or public service experience. Recent arrests and prosecutions of elected officials have eroded trust, while weak party structures and temporary movements are prompting political groups to prioritize name‑recognition over competence. Analysts stress the need for voters to select candidates with integrity and commitment to public service to restore confidence in Ecuadorian democracy.
