Ecuador President Announces Beer Tax Cut as German Breweries Eye World Cup Demand

Ecuador’s president Daniel Noboa announced a temporary tax exemption on beer and wine for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking in the national team jersey at a road‑construction ceremony in Guayas, he said the measure will lower beer prices by more than 20 percent and predicted a strong showing for Ecuador in the tournament.

In Germany’s North‑Rhine Westphalia brewing sector, companies are assessing the potential impact of the World Cup on domestic beer sales. Veltins spokesperson Ulrich Biene highlighted promotional “drive‑in” events and a continued demand for grilled food, while private brewer Thomas Stauder argued that the tournament’s effect will be limited, pointing to past World Cups, late match times in North America, and logistical challenges for outdoor viewing. The 2026 World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
