Ecuador President Daniel Noboa faces new revocation petition and protests

A new request to revoke the mandate of President Daniel Noboa and Vice‑president María José Pinto was filed by the Revoca EC group, citing alleged breaches of the government’s plan after an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. The petition, submitted under article 16 of the revocation regulations, triggers a 15‑day deadline for the National Electoral Council (CNE) to rule on its admissibility.

Opposition leaders announced citizen vigils and protests for 8, 11 and 15 July, aiming to gather at least 5,000 participants under the slogan “La revocatoria va, porque va” to pressure the CNE for a decision.

The government responded on 7 July, with legal secretary Enrique Herrería presenting an argument to the CNE seeking to archive the request. He said the petition “does not meet constitutional and legal requirements” and relies on speculation about the IMF agreement, calling it “a conjecture, a speculation that has no place in this type of request.” The administration also referenced a prior revocation case launched by indigenous leader Leonidas Iza that remains pending before the CNE.
