Ecuador prosecutors accuse seven in Villavicencio assassination case
Ecuadorian prosecutors have formally accused seven individuals as indirect authors in the 2023 assassination of presidential candidate and journalist Fernando Villavicencio. The accused include former Interior Minister José Serrano, former assemblyman Ronny Aleaga, businessman Xavier Jordán, and Daniel Salcedo, as well as leaders of the criminal organization 'Los Lobos,' including Wilmer Chavarría, known as 'Pipo.'
Prosecutors allege that Jordán financed and planned the assassination, while Serrano provided sensitive information regarding the candidate's movements. Aleaga is accused of coordinating actions to execute the killing, and Chavarría reportedly planned the operation in exchange for one million dollars.
As part of the legal proceedings, the Prosecutor's Office has requested the ratification of preventive detention for all seven suspects. Additionally, they have requested the prohibition of asset disposal and the freezing of bank accounts for the defendants. The prosecution has also asked for Interpol red notices to be issued for four suspects currently residing abroad in the United States, Venezuela, and Spain to facilitate their extradition.
