Latin American crime: High-profile assassination charges and regional violence

Various violent incidents and legal developments have been reported across Latin America.

In Ecuador, the Prosecutor General's Office has formally accused seven individuals, including former minister José Serrano and former assemblyman Ronny Aleaga, of being the indirect authors of the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. The prosecution alleges the group planned and financed the crime to silence political opposition.

In Guatemala, the National Civil Police (PNC) arrested two suspected gang members from Barrio 18 following a shooting in Santa Luisa, Zone 6, which left a 25-year-old man dead. In Peru, a 17-year-old named 'Dominik' was detained in Callao after killing a notorious criminal, Giancarlo Zegarra Cuadros, known as 'Careca', with over 20 gunshots.

Other regional reports include a shooting in Caazapá, Paraguay, where two people died and four were injured during an exchange of gunfire at a local establishment. In Colombia, the body of a 17-year-old Venezuelan national was discovered in Villa del Rosario. Additionally, an Ecuadorian police officer was sentenced to over 34 years in prison for the murder of a young man in Quito following a traffic incident.
