Rising homicide and political violence in Latin America

In late July 2026, data from the Observatory of Gender Equality in Latin America and the Caribbean showed that more than 3,800 women were killed in feminicide cases in 2024, marking a rise from previous years. UN Women officials warned that gender‑based killings were reaching pandemic‑scale levels.

In Peru, a teenager was detained after killing a known criminal in Callao.
