Ecuador indicts former Minister José Serrano in Villavicencio murder case

Three years after the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in Quito, the Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office has advanced its investigation into the crime. Prosecutors have formally indicted former Interior Minister José Serrano and six other individuals for their alleged involvement in the murder.

The prosecution alleges that Serrano may have acted as an intellectual author by sharing information regarding Villavicencio's movements with the criminal organization Los Lobos. Among the indicted is Wilmer Chavarría, known as ‘Pipo’, a leader of Los Lobos, who is alleged to have received 1 million USD to execute the assassination.

Due to the suspects' locations, the Prosecutor's Office has requested Interpol red notices and the initiation of extradition proceedings for José Serrano, Xavier Jordán, Ronny Aleaga, and Wilmer Chavarría. Serrano and Jordán are reportedly in the United States, Aleaga is believed to be in Venezuela, and Chavarría is in Spain. The prosecution has also requested that these individuals be declared fugitives and asked the court to maintain preventive detention and freeze their financial assets.
