Ecuador faces widespread flooding and landslides due to heavy rains

Heavy rainfall and the onset of the El Niño phenomenon have triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage across Ecuador. The National Secretariat of Risk Management has reported dozens of active emergencies, with Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, and Los Ríos provinces being among the most heavily impacted.

In the coastal regions, several rivers including the Esmeraldas, Pambil, Onzole, Cayapas, and Balao have overflowed their banks. These floods have inundated homes and agricultural lands, particularly affecting cocoa, banana, and passion fruit crops in Azuay and Esmeraldas. In Azuay, landslides have caused significant disruptions on the Cuenca-Molleturo-El Empalme highway, forcing authorities to implement controlled traffic and single-lane passage.

Beyond flooding, the country is facing simultaneous environmental challenges, including at least six active forest fires in provinces such as Chimborazo, Carchi, and Azuay. Authorities are currently focused on emergency response, including the distribution of first-response kits and the monitoring of river levels, while experts emphasize the need for improved long-term mitigation and infrastructure to handle recurring weather patterns.
