Overview

As of October 18, intense rainfall linked to El Niño continues to cause widespread flooding and river overflows in the Guayas, Los Ríos, and El Oro provinces. In Guayas, rainfall totals have reached 170.37 mm, resulting in dozens of flooded sectors, fallen trees, and sinkholes. Specifically, the flooding has affected 57 urban sectors in Guayaquil, exacerbated by the combination of El Niño conditions and high tides. In response to these conditions, the Ministry of Education has maintained the suspension of in-person classes in Zones 5 and 8, which cover Guayaquil, Samborondón, and Durán, to ensure student safety. By the morning of October 19, reports indicated that heavy rains have impacted over 5,511 homes nationwide. While class suspensions remain in effect for Guayaquil and Samborondón, authorities continue to monitor other areas, including Balao, Milagro, and Tenguel. By late September and throughout October, the weather situation expanded. Heavy rains and El Niño triggered landslides and river overflows in Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, and Los Ríos, impacting cocoa, banana, and passion fruit crops. In Quito, violent storms and hail caused flooding in metro stations and trapped vehicles. In Guayaquil, heavy rain led to the cancellation of the final day of the Mamá de las Ferias 2026 music festival due to a flooded pitch at the Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer. Additionally, residents in sectors such as Guasmo Sur, Guayacanes, and Samanes have faced transformer explosions and prolonged power outages. The National Electricity Corporation (CNEL EP) reported approximately 300 incidents across Guayaquil, Durán, Samborondón, and Daule, often caused by trees falling on power lines. By October 25, heavy electrical storms and intense rainfall continued to disrupt multiple regions. In Guayaquil, rainfall intensity in the center-south reached 50.07 mm per hour, causing flooding in over 20 sectors, including Guasmo, Samanes, and Mucho Lote.
