Ecuador reports high homicide and femicide rates in 2026

Ecuador continues to face significant violence, with recent data highlighting high rates of both general homicide and gender-based killings. According to the Alianza Feminista para el Monitoreo de Femi(ni)cidios, 323 women and girls were murdered due to gender-based reasons between January 1 and September 24, 2026, averaging one victim every 19 hours. The highest concentrations of these cases were found in Guayas, Manabí, and El Oro. Notably, 79% of these femicides involved firearms.

Broad criminal statistics from the Observatorio Ecuatoriano de Crimen Organizado (OECO) report that the country recorded 4,145 intentional homicides in the first half of 2026. While this represents a 10.7% decrease compared to the same period in 2025, the country remains among the most violent in its recent history. Firearms accounted for 88.37% of these homicides.

The province of El Oro has emerged as a particularly violent region. OECO data shows a 62% increase in murders in El Oro compared to the first half of 2025.
