Ecuador security companies face threats from armed groups and criminal infiltration

Security companies in Ecuador are facing a dual threat from organized crime. Armed groups are increasingly targeting these firms to steal weapons and ammunition, as seen in recent raids in Guayaquil sectors such as Los Vergeles and Kennedy. Additionally, law enforcement investigations have identified instances where legal security companies are allegedly being used as fronts for illicit activities.

John Garaycoa, president of Mac Security, noted that criminals often exploit moments of vulnerability, such as attacking custody vehicles when they are returning from assignments and are no longer on strict guard. Experts emphasize the need for enhanced intelligence and stricter controls to prevent infiltration and protect the sector from being used to facilitate criminal operations.
