Ecuadorian security and organized crime challenges

Ecuadorian security forces and private security firms are navigating complex challenges related to organized crime and tactical operations.

To bolster operational capabilities against drug trafficking and threats to the judicial system, Ecuadorian police officers have participated in international tactical training. This cooperation included 50 tactical unit members training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, with support from U.S. agencies such as the DEA and Customs and Border Protection. Additionally, 25 officers received training from the Colombian National Police to improve response capabilities for protecting judicial facilities.

Concurrently, the private security sector in Ecuador is facing significant pressure from criminal elements. Armed groups have been targeting security companies to steal weapons and ammunition, specifically in Guayaquil sectors like Los Vergeles and Kennedy. Investigations have also revealed that some legal security firms are allegedly being used as fronts for illicit activities. Industry leaders have noted that criminals exploit vulnerabilities during vehicle transitions, prompting calls for enhanced intelligence and stricter controls to prevent criminal infiltration.
