Ecuador signs trade deals with Argentina and Canada, cutting auto and tuna tariffs

Ecuador and Argentina have agreed on a reciprocal automotive pact that will take effect on August 6. The deal sets a yearly quota of up to 3,000 vehicles for ten years, with a preferential 10 % tariff on cars and zero duties on auto parts. Ecuadorian officials cite new export opportunities, while local industry groups warn the tariff reduction could affect vehicle prices, employment and competitiveness.

Separately, Ecuador’s free‑trade agreement with Canada eliminates the 7 % duty on canned tuna, moving to a zero‑percent rate. The change is expected to help Ecuadorian tuna exporters challenge Thailand’s dominance in the Canadian market, which bought $203 million of tuna in 2025. Ecuador shipped $1.755 billion of tuna that year, seeking to boost sector jobs and diversify trade.
