Ecuador's 2026 trade agreement wave

In late July 2026 Ecuador announced two new free‑trade arrangements. A deal with Argentina established a reciprocal automotive pact, granting a 10 % tariff on cars and duty‑free auto parts and setting a quota of up to 3,000 vehicles per year for ten years. At the same time, a free‑trade agreement with Canada removed the 7 % duty on canned tuna, aiming to expand Ecuador’s tuna exports into the Canadian market.

A few days later, Ecuador concluded a Reciprocal Trade Agreement with the United States. While officials argued the pact would keep Ecuador from harsher trade conditions, critics said the agreement gave permanent benefits to the United States and only temporary concessions to Ecuador, describing it as inequitable.

Together, the agreements illustrate Ecuador’s rapid push to broaden market access across multiple sectors—automotive, fisheries and broader goods—while also sparking domestic debate over the balance of benefits in its new trade relationships.
