Ecuador SRI restricts annulment of invoices issued to final consumers

Under current tax regulations from the Servicio de Rentas Internas (SRI), invoices issued with the 'consumidor final' (final consumer) designation can no longer be annulled or corrected via credit notes once they have been transmitted to the tax authority.

This regulation requires businesses, particularly small enterprises and entrepreneurs, to exercise greater precision during the billing process. Errors such as incorrect amounts, duplicate sales, or failing to identify a buyer when necessary can lead to accounting inconsistencies and difficulties in reconciling sales records.

Taxpayers must distinguish between transactions intended for a final consumer and those requiring buyer identification. If a client needs to use a receipt to support costs, expenses, or tax credits, the business must correctly record details such as a RUC, ID number (cédula), or passport.
