Ecuadorian tax administration regulatory changes

Overview

The Ecuadorian Internal Revenue Service (SRI) has implemented several administrative and regulatory updates regarding tax obligations and invoicing.

In one measure, the SRI extinguished over 3,000 tax debts across eight provinces. These debts, which did not exceed one unified basic salary, were cleared because the statute of limitations had expired. The agency directed that these obligations be removed from its systems to clean its portfolio of debts that no longer meet legal collection conditions.

Additionally, new regulations have restricted the ability to annul or correct invoices issued to a ‘consumidor final’ (final consumer) once they have been transmitted to the tax authority. Under these rules, businesses can no longer use credit notes to rectify errors in such invoices. This requires greater precision in the billing process to avoid accounting inconsistencies, particularly regarding incorrect amounts or duplicate sales.
