Colombia and Ecuador report tourism growth and business expansion
Colombia is experiencing a significant rise in tourism from Nordic countries, with arrivals nearly quadrupling in recent years. Sweden is the primary source of these travelers. While Bogotá, Cartagena, and Medellín receive the highest volume of visitors, San Andrés leads in average spending per card transaction, averaging US$ 506. Despite the growth, connectivity remains a challenge as there are no direct flights from the Nordic region, with most travelers connecting through Amsterdam.
In Ecuador, various regional tourism and business developments are underway. The Guayas Provincial Government has officially bid to host the 2030 South American Bird Fair, highlighting 18 specialized birdwatching hotspots. In the Amazon region, six provinces have formed a Tourism Chambers Federation based in Puyo to improve regional coordination and infrastructure. Additionally, the Azuay Prefecture has launched a tourism campaign for the October holiday period.
In the private sector, the fast-food chain Taco Bell has expanded its Ecuadorian presence by opening its first location in Santo Domingo, bringing its national total to 10 restaurants. Meanwhile, in Quito, Metropolitan Touring and Casa Gangotena participated in a community volunteer initiative at the San Juan de Dios Shelter to support the revitalization of the city's Historic Center.
