Ecuadorian banana industry hosts summits to address sustainability and technology

The Ecuadorian banana sector is hosting major industry events in Guayaquil to address technological, environmental, and commercial challenges. The Ecuadorian Banana Exporters' Association (AEBE) recently held the 23rd edition of Banana Time, which focused on productivity, farm management, and plant health. Notably, this event marks the first time a Latin American banana sector event has measured its carbon footprint.

Discussions included topics such as satellite-based crop estimation, biosecurity against Fusarium R4T and moko, and compliance with European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) costs. The industry remains a vital pillar of the Ecuadorian economy, with banana and plantain exports reaching 4.262 billion USD in 2025.

Looking ahead, the Banana Summit 2026 is scheduled to take place at the Expoplaza Convention Center from November 9 to 11. This summit will bring together international producers, researchers, and specialists from countries including Colombia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Spain, and the Netherlands to discuss new banana varieties, post-harvest issues, and sustainable development.
