Ecuadorian banana export sector developments

Overview

The Ecuadorian banana industry has experienced significant growth, with exports increasing by approximately 9.6% during the first eight months of 2026 compared to the previous year. This growth included a record-breaking export volume in August. The European Union remains the primary destination for these exports, followed by Russia, while exports to the United States saw a slight decline.

Despite this growth, the sector faces ongoing challenges related to climate change, specifically the El Niño phenomenon. While heavy rains have caused flooding in the El Oro province, officials report that exportable production has not yet been affected.

To address these issues, the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) hosted the 23rd edition of the Banana Time Guayaquil 2026 forum from October 28 to 30. The event featured 21 technical sessions focusing on productivity, plant health, and logistics. Notably, this marked the first time a Latin American banana sector event measured its carbon footprint. Discussions covered satellite-based crop estimation, biosecurity against Fusarium R4T and moko, and compliance with European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) costs.

Looking forward, the Banana Summit 2026 is scheduled for November 9 to 11 at the Expoplaza Convention Center. This summit will bring together international producers and researchers from countries including Colombia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Spain, and the Netherlands to discuss new banana varieties, post-harvest issues, and sustainable development.
