Ecuadorian candidates face legal challenges ahead of 2026 elections

Legal disputes are mounting ahead of Ecuador's 2026 sectional elections. Former assemblyman Jaime Estrada has appealed to the Tribunal Contencioso Electoral (TCE) to overturn a decision by the National Electoral Council (CNE) that denied his candidacy for the Manabí Prefecture.

The CNE rejected the candidacy based on a legal report stating that the necessary explicit and personal acceptance for a replacement nomination was not properly completed. The TCE has suspended the process, requiring Estrada to clarify and complete his petition within two days, including providing full names of witnesses and formal proof.

Separately, the Avanza political movement has issued a statement defending its candidates for the Quito Mayoralty and the Pichincha Prefecture against allegations of illegal pre-campaign activities. The movement rejected the accusations, which were filed by Michelle Dominique Álvarez Solano De La Sala, claiming they represent an “anticipated interpretation” of facts. Avanza stated it will wait for the TCE to analyze the elements and will exercise its candidates' right to a legal defense in accordance with the Constitution and the Code of Democracy.
