Ecuadorian candidates register for provincial prefectures

Ecuadorian provincial elections for 2026 are taking shape as several candidates officialize their bids for prefecture positions in Zamora Chinchipe and Chimborazo.

In Zamora Chinchipe, four binominal candidates have registered to compete for the prefecture. The contenders include the current prefect Karla Reátegui and Romel Morocho (Alianza Fuerza), Modesto Vega and Jhanela Castillo (Alianza Impulsando el Desarrollo), Cléver Jiménez and Eliza Medina (Alianza Juntos Podemos), and Tatiana Córdova and Byron Morales (ADN). Local voters have expressed mixed views regarding the candidates' experience and previous public service records.

In Chimborazo, Mónica Loza has officially registered her candidacy for the prefecture under the CREO political movement, accompanied by Delfín Túpac Auki Tenesaca for vice-prefecture. Loza, who currently serves as the acting prefect following the suspension of Hermel Tayupanda, will compete against other candidates including Juan Pablo Cruz (Lista 62) and Santiago Oviedo (Sí Podemos).
