Ecuadorian lawyer Mónica Luzarraga named mayoral candidate for new UP‑Pachakutik‑Futuro alliance
Lawyer and activist Mónica Luzarraga will run for mayor of Guayaquil under a coalition of Unidad Popular (UP), the indigenous Pachakutik movement and Futuro 20, abandoning her earlier candidacy with the Ecuadorian Socialist Party. The alliance, comprising lists 2, 18 and 20, was confirmed in a July 14 interview and will be presented later that day at the Guayaquil Convention Center. The agreement reduces the number of mayoral contenders from nine to seven, with other parties such as CREO and the Sociedad Patriótica retaining separate candidates.
The coalition discussed internal seat allocations, opting for a single mayoral nominee while leaving prefectural positions to be negotiated among the remaining parties. The move follows recent electoral reforms that require proportional vote distribution within alliances.
