Ecuador's August 10 holiday: VAT cut, transport tweaks, banking services
Ecuador commemorates the 217th anniversary of the 1809 independence uprising on 10 August 2026 with a three‑day national holiday (8‑10 August). President Daniel Noboa signed Executive Decree 465, temporarily lowering the value‑added tax on tourism services from 15 % to 8 % for the holiday period. The reduced rate applies to hotels, restaurants, tourist transport, travel agencies, parks and other activities defined in the Tourism Law, and the Internal Revenue Service (SRI) will implement the change after publication in the Official Register.
Public transport adapts to the holiday: the Trolebús and Ecovía will run from 06:00 to 21:00 on 8 and 10 August with 123 vehicles total, and from 06:00 to 20:00 on 9 August with 103 vehicles. The Quito Metro will operate from 07:00 to 23:00 on 8 August and from 07:00 to 22:00 on 9‑10 August. Private banks will keep ATMs, non‑bank correspondents and digital channels available nationwide throughout the holiday. Several cantons will enjoy a four‑day break by adding a local holiday on 7 August.
The Guayaquil Terminal expects about 243 000 travelers between 7‑10 August, while the National Assembly held a solemn session recalling the historic independence events. Quito also offers a cultural agenda of festivals, concerts and exhibitions for visitors during the holiday.
