Guayaquil holiday transport demand and tourism impact

Overview

The three-day national holiday (8–10 August 2026) marking the 217th anniversary of the 1809 independence uprising spurred a sharp rise in inter-provincial travel from Guayaquil. President Daniel Noboa’s Executive Decree 465 temporarily lowered the tourism VAT from 15% to 8% for hotels, restaurants, transport, travel agencies, parks and other registered services. The tax cut, announced alongside the holiday, was intended to boost domestic tourism and aid economic recovery.

Transport operators responded with expanded schedules: Quito’s Trolebús and Ecovía ran from 06:00–21:00 on 8 and 10 August (123 vehicles) and 06:00–20:00 on 9 August (103 vehicles); the Metro operated until 23:00 on 8 August and until 22:00 on 9–10 August. The Guayaquil terminal projected about 243,000 passengers between 7–10 August, while private banks kept ATMs and digital channels fully operational.

Several cantons added a local holiday on 7 August, creating a four-day break in places such as Portovelo and Buena Fe. The National Assembly held a solemn session commemorating the historic events, and Quito offered a cultural programme of festivals, concerts and exhibitions for visitors.

Following the holiday, the Ministry of Economic Development and Productive reported that the period generated approximately $69.91 million in economic activity, a 24.22% increase compared to 2025. The holiday saw 1.07 million trips and a national hotel occupancy rate of 53.3%, the highest for this specific holiday in a decade. High demand was noted in Baños (100% occupancy), Santa Elena (80% occupancy), and the Amazon (55.7% growth in trips). While the economic impact was robust, authorities noted logistical challenges including traffic congestion in the Santa Elena peninsula and poor road conditions on the Cuenca-Girón-Pasaje route.
