Overview

The three-day national holiday (8–10 August 2026) marking the 217th anniversary of the 1809 independence uprising spurred a sharp rise in inter-provincial travel from Guayaquil. Several cantons added a local holiday on 7 August, creating a four-day break in places such as Portovelo and Buena Fe. The National Assembly held a solemn session commemorating the historic events, and Quito offered a cultural programme of festivals, concerts and exhibitions for visitors.

Following the holiday, the Ministry of Economic Development and Productive reported that the period generated approximately $69.91 million in economic activity, a 24.22% increase compared to 2025. The holiday saw 1.07 million trips and a national hotel occupancy rate of 53.3%, the highest for this specific holiday in a decade. High demand was noted in Baños (100% occupancy), Santa Elena (80% occupancy), and the Amazon (55.7% growth in trips). While the economic impact was robust, authorities noted logistical challenges including traffic congestion in the Santa Elena peninsula and poor road conditions on the Cuenca-Girón-Pasaje route.
