Ecuador's Avanza says TCE appeal does not endanger Jorge Yunda's Quito mayoral precandidacy
The Avanza political movement in Ecuador issued a statement that the recent procedural step taken by the Tribunal Contencioso Electoral (TCE) does not jeopardize Jorge Yunda’s precandidacy for the Quito mayoral race. The TCE has admitted an appeal concerning the earlier inadmissibility of a complaint lodged by party member Geoconda Tufiño, who had sought to nullify Avanza’s June 27 primary elections and, if successful, to void Yunda’s candidacy. Avanza emphasized that the tribunal will only assess whether the initial dismissal of Tufiño’s complaint was properly reasoned, and will not rule on the validity of the primary process or Yunda’s suitability. The party described the notion that the TCE has opened a substantive challenge to its internal elections as “jurídicamente incorrecto.”
