Ecuador's CPCCS faces candidate disqualification and impeachment proceedings

The Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) in Ecuador is facing significant legal and political challenges. In one instance, the Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE) disqualified José Manuel Buñay, a candidate from the Chimborazo province. Buñay, who had previously been cleared by the National Electoral Council (CNE), is contesting the decision, alleging discrimination and centralism. He claims the TCE's disqualification based on the interpretation of his professional experience certificates is subjective and prevents provincial and rural representation.

Separately, the Oversight Commission has recommended proceeding with an impeachment trial against CPCCS member David Rosero. The recommendation passed with six votes from the ADN movement, while the Revolución Ciudadana bloc abstained. Rosero faces allegations of a conflict of interest regarding a purported meeting with Inés Romero, a judge and candidate for Attorney General. The proceedings will involve analyzing evidence, including videos and photographs, presented by the accuser.
