Ecuador suspends Amigo movement, triggering protests and legal challenges

The Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE) ordered a nine‑month provisional suspension of the political organization Amigo, which had been set to host candidates of the Revolution Ciudadana movement. The decision, linked to a secret money‑laundering investigation, bars Amigo from the upcoming November sub‑national elections.

Supporters and opposition figures gathered outside the National Electoral Council (CNE) in Quito, denouncing the measure as a “democratic assault” and accusing President Daniel Noboa’s government of political persecution. The CNE filed a formal complaint with the TCE alleging electoral infractions for failing to provide detailed financial reports, while experts warned the sanctions could undermine the impartiality of electoral institutions.

Leaders of the Revolution Ciudadana vowed to place their candidates on other party lists, stating that the suspension will not prevent their participation in the vote. The controversy intensifies debates over electoral fairness ahead of the November 29 elections.
