Ed Miliband cites family history in defense of Israeli settlement sanctions

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has stated that the memory of his late mother, a Jewish refugee who lost 60 relatives in Nazi concentration camps, influenced his decision to use strong language regarding the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. Speaking on 'The Rest Is Politics' podcast, Miliband addressed his use of terms such as ‘ethnic cleansing’ and ‘war crimes’ when discussing the treatment of Palestinians.

Miliband defended the British government's recent decision to impose sanctions on Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. These measures include an import ban on goods from illegal settlements, restrictions on services that support settlement expansion, and a ban on settlement advertising within the UK. The legislation is expected to be implemented within six to nine months.

The Foreign Secretary described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as ‘indescribably terrible’ and noted that restrictions on dual-use goods often prevent the passage of essential, innocent items. He also announced plans to co-host a conference with Jordan during the upcoming UN General Assembly to bring global attention to the regional health and humanitarian crisis.
