Eddie Jara charged with illicit enrichment in Paraguay

Former Petropar president Eddie Jara has been charged with illicit enrichment by Paraguay’s Economic Crimes and Anti-Corruption Unit. Prosecutors identified an unjustified wealth discrepancy estimated at approximately G. 5.4 billion, which does not correspond to his legitimate income during his tenure at the state oil company.

The investigation, led by prosecutor Yeimy Adle, analyzed bank deposits, credit card payments, loan repayments, and vehicle acquisitions. Investigators noted instances where monthly loan installments reportedly exceeded Jara’s salary. The probe covers traceable banking operations from August 2023 to March 2026.

Jara’s ex-wife, Karina Otazú, has also been charged with money laundering for her alleged role in receiving and transferring funds linked to the investigated resources.

Prosecution has requested precautionary measures, including periodic court appearances, a ban on leaving the country, and restrictions on bank accounts and vehicles to preserve assets for potential forfeiture.
