Investigation into Eddie Jara in Paraguay
Overview
Paraguayan prosecutors have charged former Petropar president Eddie Jara with illicit enrichment following an investigation by the Economic Crimes and Anti-Corruption Unit. Authorities identified an unjustified wealth discrepancy of approximately G. 5.4 billion, noting that certain financial activities, such as loan repayments, appeared to exceed his legitimate income during his tenure at the state oil company.
In addition to Jara, his ex-wife, Karina Otazú, has been charged with money laundering for her alleged role in transferring funds linked to the investigation. Prosecutors have requested various precautionary measures, including travel bans and restrictions on bank accounts and vehicles.
During questioning, Jara claimed that a portion of the disputed funds, totaling G. 2,800 million, originated from a US$ 400,000 professional services contract and was subsequently lent in cash to a businesswoman in the fuel industry. However, the Public Ministry maintains that financial records do not support the claim that he received these funds before issuing the loan. Jara’s defense has signaled intentions to appeal the seizure of vehicles and bank accounts, arguing that the restrictions could cause economic harm and noting that at least one seized account does not belong to the defendant.
