Edeka shoppers can slash weekly bills with app coupons and MHD discounts
Edeka, Germany's largest grocery retailer, reports an annual turnover of roughly €72 billion and employs over 400 000 staff. About 3 400 independent store owners run the markets, with pricing decisions made locally rather than centrally.
The free Edeka app for iPhone and Android aggregates digital coupons, the weekly flyer, a shopping list and, since 2025, the Payback loyalty program. At checkout a QR code generated by the app is valid for 60 minutes; activated coupons and Payback points are applied together, typically delivering a 1‑3 % discount per purchase. Additional challenges in the app unlock further coupons.
Significant savings also come from reduced‑MHD (minimum‑shelf‑life) items, which are marked with coloured stickers and discounted by 30‑50 % on products such as dairy, yogurt, fresh meat and fruit. Edeka’s wholesale arm, Handelshof, supplies its “Gut & Günstig” private‑label range to restaurants as well.
