Payback loyalty program in Germany

Entities: Handelshof · Edeka · Federal University of São Paulo · Payback · Gut & Günstig

Overview

In early July 2026 Payback expanded in Germany through a partnership with BurdaDirect, allowing magazine‑subscription points to be converted 1:1 into Miles&More miles at roughly €0.0101 per mile. The same announcement confirmed that Edeka had been part of Payback since January 2025, awarding one point per €2 spent and permitting redemption for discounts, vouchers or transfers to partner programmes.

Later coverage explained how Edeka shoppers can maximise savings via the free Edeka app, which aggregates digital flyers, a shopping list and Payback points. Because each of the roughly 3,400 cooperative stores sets its own prices, coupons and promotions differ by location. Users must manually activate coupons, generating a 60‑minute QR code for checkout; combined with Payback points this typically yields a 1‑3 % discount per purchase. The app also highlights reduced‑minimum‑shelf‑life items marked with coloured stickers, offering 30‑50 % price cuts on dairy, meat, fruit and other perishables. Edeka’s wholesale arm, Handelshof, continues to supply its “Gut & Günstig” private‑label range to restaurants and hotels, extending the programme’s reach beyond the grocery aisle.
