EDF implements seasonal electricity off-peak hour reforms in France
EDF has begun notifying customers of a major reform to electricity tariff schedules in France. This transition marks a shift from the historical model established in the 1970s and 1980s toward a system that better aligns with modern energy production and the energy transition.
Under the new regulations driven by the Commission de régulation de l'énergie (CRE) via TURPE 7 rules, off-peak hours will now vary seasonally. While subscribers retain eight off-peak hours daily, the timing will change between summer and winter. In summer, off-peak periods may occur during the afternoon to capitalize on increased solar energy production. The schedule must include at least five consecutive hours between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM, with the remaining hours potentially occurring between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Following an initial phase that adjusted 1.7 million households, this current stage aims to reach an additional 9.3 million customers by October 2027. To benefit from these adjusted rates, households must be equipped with Linky smart meters, which allow for the precise measurement and management of these shifting time slots.
