Edge and ATMAS drive biomethane expansion in Brazil and Portugal

Edge, a new firm under Cosan’s Compass group, is expanding access to natural gas and biomethane in Brazil. The company highlights a blend approach, citing up to 25% CO₂ reduction from natural gas and up to 87% emission cuts when biomethane replaces diesel in transport. Edge has added a 14 million m³‑per‑day LNG regasification terminal in Santos and introduced an off‑grid LNG supply model using refrigerated trucks to serve industries outside the existing pipeline network.

In Portugal, the newly created Associação para os Gases Renováveis (ATMAS) is urging faster integration of biomethane into the national gas network. ATMAS argues that the existing gas system can accommodate biomethane without modification and could replace up to 60% of natural gas, costing roughly a third of full electrification. The association targets a 2.7 TWh biomethane output by 2030, notes three operational plants and more than 70 potential projects, and stresses lower consumer costs compared with electricity for heating and industrial processes.
