Ediciones Era suspends operations after 66 years

Ediciones Era, a prominent Mexican independent publishing house founded in 1960, has announced it will suspend its operations after 66 years. The decision follows a severe financial crisis, with the company reporting that sales plummeted to just 25 percent of pre-pandemic levels due to a disappearing network of bookstores and a changing book market.

To avoid unmanageable debt, the publisher sold its house in Mexico City’s Roma neighborhood to facilitate outstanding payments. The company has begun the process of closing accounts with bookstores and points of sale.

While initial reports indicated a total closure, subsequent communications from the publisher clarified that they are reducing operations to a minimum rather than shutting down entirely. They intend to maintain their existing catalog and will conduct special sales of their works at various bookstores and national book fairs to ensure their literary legacy remains available.
