Ediciones Era suspends operations and new publications

Ediciones Era, a prominent Mexican independent publishing house founded in 1960, has announced it will suspend its operations after 66 years following a severe financial crisis. The company reported that sales had dropped to 25 percent of pre-pandemic levels, driven by a changing book market and a diminishing network of bookstores.

To manage debt, the publisher sold its property in Mexico City’s Roma neighborhood. While the company previously clarified it was reducing operations to a minimum to maintain its catalog, it has now begun the process of closing accounts with bookstores and points of sale. Furthermore, the publisher has announced it will no longer publish any new titles.

The cessation of new publications has drawn widespread mourning from literary, academic, and intellectual circles, who recognize the house’s contributions to Spanish-language culture, literature, and social sciences. This development is viewed as a symptom of a broader crisis within the Mexican book industry. According to data from the Cámara Nacional de la Industria Editorial Mexicana (CANIEM), the sector is facing a sharp decline; in 2024, production fell to 20,054 titles, a 15 percent decrease from 2023. Additionally, the volume of printed units dropped from 105.1 million in 2020 to 76.4 million in 2024, a reduction of more than 27 percent. Observers attribute these trends to macroeconomic conditions and public policy decisions.
