Editorial Era announces cessation of new book publications

Editorial Era has announced that it will no longer publish new titles, signaling a significant shift for the prominent Mexican publishing house founded in 1960. The decision has drawn widespread mourning from literary, academic, and intellectual circles, who recognize the publisher's extensive contribution to Spanish-language culture, literature, and social sciences.

The cessation of new publications by Era is viewed as a symptom of a broader crisis within the Mexican book industry. According to data from the Cámara Nacional de la Industria Editorial Mexicana (CANIEM), the sector is facing a sharp decline. In 2024, production fell to 20,054 titles, a 15 percent decrease from 2023.

Furthermore, the volume of printed units has dropped significantly; 76.4 million copies were edited in 2024, compared to 105.1 million in 2020, representing a reduction of more than 27 percent in just four years. Observers attribute this decline to a combination of macroeconomic conditions and public policy decisions that have negatively impacted the publishing sector.
