Edo State establishes new electricity regulatory commission

Edo State has officially assumed regulatory oversight of its intrastate electricity market through the establishment of the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ESERC). Effective August 21, 2024, regulatory responsibility has transitioned from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to ESERC, following amendments to the Electricity Act.

Commissioner for Energy Paul Usenbo stated that this shift allows the state to formulate policies tailored to its specific economic and social needs, aiming to improve power supply and attract private investment for industries and households. The commission will influence decisions regarding electricity generation, distribution, and consumption.

Usenbo clarified that this regulatory transition is distinct from the ongoing corporate restructuring of the distribution business. The state must still complete the capitalization, delineation of assets and liabilities, and the formal transfer of contracts and personnel to eliminate market uncertainty.
