Edo State implements Special Criminal Court amid security concerns
Edo State has established a Special Criminal Court to address rising incidents of kidnapping and cultism. In its inaugural case, a court in Benin City convicted four suspects for a daylight abduction at a vegetable market. The defendants, identified as Marvellous Isaac, Wisdom Michael, Rufus Emete Michael, and Gift Raphael, received death sentences, while a fifth individual received life imprisonment. The legal proceedings, from arraignment to judgment, were completed within 74 days.
Despite these judicial developments, reports indicate a significant budgetary imbalance in the state’s security strategy. The Edo State government has spent N14.48 billion on security votes and services over a nine-month period. However, critics note that no capital funds have been released to the ministry responsible for coordinating public security. This lack of capital investment limits the procurement of essential long-term assets such as surveillance technology, forensic equipment, and tactical command centers, even as the state faces persistent violent attacks.
