Edo State security and judicial measures
Overview
The Edo State government has initiated several measures to combat rising crime, including the demolition of buildings allegedly linked to cultism and organ harvesting. In Uromi, authorities destroyed a bungalow belonging to a suspect accused of harvesting organs from three women.
To address kidnapping and cultism, the state established a Special Criminal Court. In its first major case, the court convicted four individuals for a daylight abduction at a vegetable market, issuing death sentences. The legal process for this case was completed within 74 days.
Despite these judicial actions, concerns have been raised regarding the state security budget. While N14.48 billion has been spent on security votes and services over nine months, critics point out that no capital funds have been released to the coordinating ministry. This has reportedly limited the procurement of essential long-term assets such as surveillance technology and forensic equipment.
