Nigeria NDLEA reports South African involvement in drug trafficking

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported an increase in the involvement of South African nationals in international drug trafficking operations within Nigeria. Agency officials stated that three South Africans were recently arrested with significant quantities of heroin, cocaine, and synthetic cannabis, known locally as “Thai Loud.”

Specific incidents include the arrest of Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie at Port Harcourt International Airport for attempting to smuggle 32.74 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, and the arrest of Will Jessica Ann at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport for allegedly concealing 5.75 kilograms of heroin in luggage while using her three-year-old son as a cover.

In separate developments, NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa announced plans to partner with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to introduce mandatory drug testing for commercial drivers to reduce road accidents. Marwa also proposed that drug screening be included in marriage preparations, alongside HIV and genotype testing, to ensure prospective couples undergo rehabilitation if they test positive.
