Nigeria drug crackdown expands, assets seized

Overview

Since the NDLEA‑Ghana joint operation began in May 2026, Nigerian authorities have repeatedly widened the scope of interceptions and asset freezes. Earlier raids targeted cannabis farms in Edo, uncovered cocaine at the airport, and seized large cannabis consignments at Lagos’s seaports. By early July, a South African was detained with heroin at Abuja airport and a massive cache of Canadian‑origin cannabis was uncovered at Apapa, while methamphetamine was seized from an Okada rider.

In the second half of July, the NDLEA intensified its focus on tramadol trafficking. Two trailers on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway were seized, containing a total of 1.63 million 250 mg tramadol pills; the drivers were arrested. This followed a June recovery of 558,900 pills on the same corridor. Simultaneously, a residential warehouse in Benin City was raided, resulting in the arrest of a husband‑wife team and the seizure of over 400 kg of skunk‑type cannabis, including compressed Canadian Loud.

The agency also continued financial actions, freezing roughly ₦9.84 bn in bank accounts and placing interim forfeiture orders on properties and luxury vehicles linked to a February meth‑lab operation.

On 24 July, the NDLEA announced the discovery of industrial‑scale methamphetamine laboratories in the forests of Ogun and Oyo states and called on traditional rulers, parents and community leaders to help make rural areas hostile to traffickers. In the same period, the agency disclosed that more than two billion tramadol pills had been seized over the preceding 18 months through coordinated operations with partners in India and Pakistan. Prosecutors also arraigned alleged cartel kingpin Anochili Innocent, three Mexican nationals and six others before Lagos’s Federal High Court on eleven charges related to a meth lab in Abidagba village, Ogun State, which reportedly produced over 2,400 kg of meth valued at about N480 billion (≈ $360 m).
