Rivers State gas pipeline explosion injures 20 and destroys 50 houses

A gas pipeline explosion occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in the Aleto community of Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State. The blast involved a pipeline operated by NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), a subsidiary of NNPC Limited.

Local reports indicate that the explosion injured approximately 20 people and destroyed more than 50 houses. The blast also damaged commercial stalls, a mechanic workshop, and several vehicles. Some residents and eyewitnesses alleged that the pipeline had been leaking for roughly three weeks prior to the incident.

Daniel Chuma, Leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, stated that the council had previously petitioned the Nigeria Gas Company, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment regarding a leak in the area, but no decisive action was taken.

NNPC Limited has activated emergency response procedures and isolated the affected section of the pipeline to contain the situation. The company is working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and security agencies to assess the extent of the damage to property, people, and the environment. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the explosion.
