Rivers State gas pipeline explosion

Overview

On October 15, 2026, a gas pipeline operated by NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) exploded in the Aleto community of Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State. The blast reportedly injured approximately 20 people and destroyed more than 50 houses, along with commercial stalls, a mechanic workshop, and several vehicles.

Local officials, including Daniel Chuma, Leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, noted that the council had previously petitioned the Nigeria Gas Company, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment regarding a leak in the area, but no decisive action was taken. Some residents alleged the pipeline had been leaking for roughly three weeks prior to the explosion.

NNPC Limited activated emergency response procedures and isolated the affected section of the pipeline. The company is working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies, and host community leadership to assess damage to people, property, and the environment. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident and implement corrective measures.
