Eduardo Bolsonaro convicted of coercion by Brazil Supreme Court
Three of the four ministers of the Supreme Court's First Chamber voted to convict former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro of the crime of coercion in the context of the 2022 attempted coup. Relator Justice Alexandre de Moraes described the threats as an attempt to pressure the judiciary and impede the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The decision, announced by ministers Cristiano Zanin and Carmen Lúcia, emphasized that the criminal process is not a farce and that attacks on institutions threaten democracy.
The conviction is expected to reshape the political strategy of Flávio Bolsonaro, who had sought a less confrontational campaign. Analysts note that the ruling forces Flávio to adopt a more radical stance toward the courts, aligning his campaign more closely with his father's 2022 approach and limiting any rapprochement with the judiciary.
