Education Cannot Wait reports record surge in attacks on schools
The global fund Education Cannot Wait (ECW) has reported a record surge in attacks against education during 2024 and 2025. Documented incidents reached 9,259, marking an increase of more than 50 percent compared to the 2022-2023 period.
According to the report, 258 million children across 87 countries are experiencing severe learning disruptions due to conflict and insecurity. Currently, 93 million children are out of school entirely. The data reveals that over 3,600 of the recorded attacks were directed specifically at schools, and the military use of educational facilities has nearly doubled.
ECW Director Maysa Jalbout warned that these disruptions lead to profound consequences, including the loss of literacy skills and the loss of stability for vulnerable youth. The report highlights that more than 10,600 students and educators have been killed, injured, or kidnapped as a result of these conflicts.
