Overview

The global education crisis has intensified, with reports indicating that 258 million children across 87 countries face severe learning disruptions due to conflict and insecurity. Violence against educational institutions has reached unprecedented levels, with recorded incidents rising to between 8,566 and 9,259 in 2024 and 2025, a 40 to 50 per cent increase over the 2022–2023 period. The human toll includes over 10,600 students, teachers, and education personnel reported killed, injured, or abducted.

On the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, United Nations agencies reported a sharp escalation in violence. UNESCO noted that attacks on schools rose by 33% in 2025, with 1,680 verified incidents compared to 1,265 in 2024, particularly in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Haiti. UNICEF reported that 93 million children are currently out of school due to global crises, warning that this increases vulnerability to exploitation, child labor, early marriage, and recruitment by armed groups. Additionally, over 90% of children in conflict-affected areas are unable to perform basic reading tasks by age 10.

The UN also verified a record 38,558 grave violations against children in 2025, affecting 24,174 individuals, the highest number recorded since monitoring began. In 2024, government forces were responsible for more than 50% of these violations. Experts, including Dr. Maleiha Malik of the Education Above All Foundation, warn that these disruptions can “fuel long-term poverty and cycles of violence.”
