Education officials address viral ‘aura farming’ trend in schools

Education authorities in Costa Rica and Mexico have addressed the viral youth trend known as ‘aura farming’ or ‘aura battles,’ stating there is no inherent reason to prohibit the activity in schools.

In Costa Rica, the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) clarified that students should not be sanctioned solely for participating in the trend. Minister José Leonardo Sánchez Hernández emphasized that authorities must evaluate specific behaviors rather than the name of the activity. While it can be a form of recreation, it becomes a disciplinary matter if used to humiliate, harass, or discriminate against others, or if it disrupts lessons and safety.

Similarly, in Querétaro, Mexico, Secretary of Education Martha Elena Soto Obregón noted that the trend does not need to be banned as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of others. She suggested that such expressions of confidence or charisma could occur during breaks, provided that the use of mobile devices to record them respects privacy and school rules.
