Mexico and Peru implement school cell phone restrictions

Educational authorities in Mexico and Peru are implementing new regulations to restrict the use of cell phones and electronic devices in schools to minimize distractions and improve academic focus.

In Mexico, the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) will enforce a ban on smartphones and smart devices in primary and secondary schools starting November 3. The regulation applies throughout the school day, including recess. While students may carry devices in their backpacks, they are prohibited from using them except for emergencies or scheduled pedagogical purposes. The move follows reports from teachers indicating that over 79% have detected attention issues linked to technology use.

In the Junín region of Peru, the Ministry of Education has officialized similar restrictions. Local authorities stated that while technology is not inherently bad, schools must establish internal protocols to ensure responsible use. Parents have expressed mixed reactions, noting that while reducing distractions is positive, some students rely on mobile devices for virtual activities or to maintain contact with their families.
